No wonder the defense couldn’t sniff this one out. I’ve watched the Oak Ridge Middle School (Marion, Iowa) football team’s trick play a dozen times now, and I’m just starting to sort it out.
Follow the ball, and you’ll see the quarterback hand off to a pulling tight end, who laterals to one receiver, who laterals to another, who finds the running back streaking down the field for what appears to be a 60-yard touchdown pass. Couldn’t be easier. Credit the one defender who stuck with the play before face-planting into the field in a last-ditch effort to stop the madness.
According to MaxPreps, which posted the video, Oak Ridge head coach Mike Geers designed the play, and his players named it “Cannon.” I probably would’ve called it “Chaos.” Geers reportedly fired the Cannon after the opposing team tried their own trick play, and it was a blast, all right.
