Benton Harbor is getting national attention.
You may recall that, last week, Free Press high school columnist Mick McCabe continued to tell the inspiring story of 74-year-old Elliot Uzelac, who led the Benton Harbor football team to its first-ever playoff bid this year.
Well, the story continues, with Benton Harbor walloping Dowagiac 28-7 on Friday night to move on to the district finals against Zeeland West.
Keep in mind, this is a football program that went two consecutive seasons without winning (0-9 in 2013 and 2014) and, when Uzelac came in, the water on the practice field was contaminated, the weight room was in poor shape and players were malnourished.
Now, the program is making a playoff run. And it caught the attention of Scott Van Pelt, who runs the midnight airing of ESPN’s SportsCenter. He made it his “One Big Thing” on Friday night/Saturday morning. (And McCabe earned a mention!)
Check it out for yourself.
