Maddie Barberan helped lead the sixth-seeded John Jay High School volleyball team to a 25-15, 25-13, 25-11 win over visiting Mahopac, the 11th seed, in the Section 1 Class AA opening round Friday.
The Patriots will visit third-seeded Clarkstown North at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday for the quarterfinals.
“We did see them in a tournament earlier this year and I think we beat them,” said John Jay Maria Mahoney, whose Patriots improved to 14-5. “But you can’t really judge a team based on tournaments. We feel confident and we’re very excited about playing on Tuesday.”
Barberan had eight kills and six digs for the host Patriots. Teammate Robin Sarica had six digs, while Sam Fitzgerald contributed with eight kills, four blocks and two digs. Kirsten Zier (five kills, five aces) and Alyssa Ashley (17 assists) also pitched in.
“It’s nice, we executed everything we practiced,” Mahoney added. “We’ve been working on some tweaks with our offense. Our passing was awesome, we only missed two serves.”
Beacon 3, Peekskill 1 — Irina Alekseeva had 23 kills, 18 assists and four aces to lift eighth-seeded host Beacon in a 21-25, 25-20, 25-18, 25-19 win over No. 9 Peekskill in the first round of the Section 1 Class B tournament.
Lauren Schetter contributed with 18 kills, 24 assists, three aces and 11 digs.
“I think we were a little nervous to start the first sectional game of the year,” said Beacon coach Ron Pagliaro. “But the girls kept it together and pulled it off as a team.”
Beacon visits top-seeded Pelham at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday for the quarterfinals.
Hendrick Hudson 3, Our Lady of Lourdes 0 — Ceara Giametta had six assists but the No. 15 Warriors lost to the host second-seeded Sailors 11-25, 9-25, 11-25 in the Section 1 Class B opening round.
“We played a tough schedule,” said Lourdes coach Emily Krieger. “We’re looking to take some of the things we learned from this season and rebuild for next season.”
