After two overtime periods and penalty kicks, the Spackenkill High School boys soccer team edged out James I. O’Neill for the Section 9 Class B championship at Marlboro High School Saturday.
Junior Travis Klipp scored the game-winning penalty kick to clinch the Spartans’ finals matchup against the Raiders after the 1-1 tie was left unsettled.
The Spartans began the game quickly as their offense seized control of the ball often. However, The Raiders countered with their own quickness and were first to get on the scoreboard with a quick-footed strike from Griffin Clark. O’Neill lead 1-0 in the 37th minute.
Spackenkill continued to push down the sidelines as the match entered the second half. Spartan junior Chris Stamper found himself with a small opening down-pitch and converted on a shot, leveling the score with 18 minutes left in regulation.
Five minutes into overtime, Raider goalie Thomas Kwietniak snagged the save of the game, a full-stretched dive and catch to keep the tie.
With tension rising, both sides entered the second of two overtime periods knotted at 1-1. Physical play dominated the extra time, as the Raiders earned a free kick deep in Spartan territory but failed to convert the chance.
Spackenkill then took control during penalty kicks, ultimately out-shooting the Raiders 4-2 to earn them the title.
Up next, the Section 1 championship.
