Friday’s Class 3A sectional semifinal between Guerin Catholic and Bishop Chatard played out like the low-scoring, grind-it-out, smash-mouth game it was expected to be.
Fifth-ranked Chatard came up with a pair of key stops in a second half that saw the first three drives each result in a touchdown. The Trojans (7-3) proceeded to bleed dry the clock as they beat No. 4 Guerin (8-3) 14-7 at Lawrence North High School.
“You guys are making me 100 years old,” Chatard coach Vince Lorenzano told his team after the game. “The effort is always there. What’s not beautiful are the penalties. You’ve got to play smarter. To be a champion, you can’t make mistakes.”

Penalties bogged down the game, with a combined 19 called for 168 yards. Both teams and their respective fans were verbally upset throughout the game with the officials.
Guerin coach Tom Dilley said he didn’t want to comment on the officiating. Lorenzano said his team committed some uncharacteristic penalties but declined to speak on the officiating.
After 32:10 of scoreless football, Bishop Chatard jump-started a scoring outburst. The first three drives of the second half resulted in touchdowns – two for Chatard and one for Guerin. Jarrod Stiver dove into the end zone from 1 yard out to cap a 16-play drive taking up the first 8:10 of the third quarter.
“That score really boosted our confidence,” Stiver said.
However, the Golden Eagles responded on the ensuing drive with a 1-yard TD of its own. Carter McGinnis went off-center to the left to tie the score 7-all with 10:45 remaining.
Chatard wasn’t fazed and picked up right where it left off, putting together an 8-play drive – all runs – to take the lead for good. Gabe Coleman punched the ball into the end zone on a 5-yard run with 7:14 remaining in the fourth quarter.

The Trojans defense stepped up after their go-ahead touchdown, forcing a punt and a turnover on downs. Their defense forced three punts and two turnovers on downs, holding Guerin Catholic to one touchdown and one missed field goal attempt in the win.
“We knew the defense could do it (stop them late),” said Stiver. “We trusted them, and they stepped up and delivered. It was great to see.”
The eight first-half drives result in a combined zero points and two missed field goals. Guerin’s Caleb Quick missed a 42-yard field goal attempt late in the first quarter. His kick was on line but came up a few yards short. Bishop Chatard’s Caleb Kobets missed a 37-yard field goal attempt as the clock expired in the first half. His kick had the distance but clanked off the left upright.
“We had more patience and were able to put it together in the second half,” Lorenzano said. “When we can put it all together, we’re dangerous. There were glimpse of that in the second half. I’m still waiting for us to play a full game.”
The win for the Trojans was sweet revenge, as Stiver put it, after they lost to the Golden Eagles three weeks earlier, 17-13. The Trojans had led 13-0 at half but were outscored 17-0 in the second half. The second half was kinder to them this time around.
“We weren’t trying to beat them twice. We were trying to beat them this time,” Dilley said. “You always hear people talk about how daunting it is to beat a team twice. Well, don’t try to beat them twice. Try to beat them this time. That’s what we tried to do. We just didn’t finish drives. Simple enough. Didn’t finish our drives.”
