Maria Barefoot scored the winner in overtime as the Spackenkill girls soccer team edged Rhinebeck High School, 1-0, to capture a fifth straight Section 9 Class B title on Saturday at Marlboro High School.
Both teams created scoring chances throughout, but Barefoot broke through with a quick-footed strike that just eluded the goalkeeper with two minutes left in the first overtime period.
Spackenkill (19-0) faces the Section 1 champion in a sub-regional at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at Tappan Zee High School.
The Spartans had many promising possessions early in the first half, but Rhinebeck showed resolve, clearing the ball and turning away several corner kicks.
The Hawks’ strong midfield play and tight defense kept the game scoreless. Sarah Tobias opened up the second half with two consecutive spectacular saves – the first an impressive diving stop to her left – as Spackenkill pushed down the pitch.
The Spartans were without one of their top scorers, Eileen Fiore, who went down with an apparent leg injury late in the first half.
Rhinebeck (14-3) had won the Class C section title last season before moving up to Class B. The Hawks’ three losses this season came against Spackenkill.
