KARACHI: There was a short news item in the print media reporting that a schoolteacher suffered injuries in a scuffle with officials of the Peshawar Electric Supply Company (Pesco) in Kakki subdivision of Bannu district. The incident occurred when a Pesco team with a police escort visited a photocopy shop that was using an illegal connection, i.e., a kunda and when they tried to arrest the owner, the bystanders got involved and in the ensuing brawl, a teacher who was at the shop was injured. Subsequently, a case was filed against the line superintendent and other Pesco officials. The residents of Kakki subdivision are now demanding that the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa government arrest the Pesco official for embarrassing the people involved in the brawl.
What embarrassment are these people talking about? Shouldn’t the owner of the photocopy shop be embarrassed for getting caught red-handed stealing, cheating and not paying for the electricity he was using? Wasn’t it the duty of the Pesco official to try and get the kunda hooks removed? If anyone is to be blamed for what happened to the teacher, it is the owner of the shop and those who are backing him.
