Frank Bensel is back in the chase.
The longtime Century assistant shot a 5-under 67 in the opening round of the National Car Rental PGA Assistant Championship on Thursday at PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, Florida and was tied for second, one shot off the lead. He’s won the event three times already, in 2010, 2011 and 2013.
“The Wanamaker (Course) just suits my game,” Bensel said. “I don’t hit the ball too high, which helps in Florida, because the wind does not affect me as much. I’ve also learned about the grass down here and how to best read the greens.”
Paul Selvaggio (Wykagyl) also shot a 67 in Round 1.
Defending champion Grant Sturgeon (Winged Foot) is tied for 16th following a 2-under 70. Anthony Casalino (Innis Arden/Yonkers) is also 2-under. Kyle Baehler (Willow Ridge) is tied for 87th after shooting a 3-over 75.
