Getting knocked out early in last year’s postseason was all the motivation the Arlington High School boys soccer team needed for this year.
And now, the Admirals are going to the Section 1 Class AA finals.
Top-seeded Arlington will face seventh-seeded Yorktown on Saturday at noon on its home field, after beating fifth-seeded Mamaroneck 2-0 at home on Thursday.
“We had a little motivation (getting eliminated early last year),” said Admirals coach Craig Sanborn, whose team will appear in its first section final since 2013. “Most of the guys returned from last year’s team. They’re hungry.”
Yorktown was a Class A finalist last season, though it lost to Byram Hills in the section final. Arlington has not played Yorktown this year, but that’s not impacting the Admirals’ approach.
“We don’t know anything about them, which is sometimes OK,” Sanborn said of Yorktown. “Whether we know something or not, it’s not going to change the way we play. We’ll get some research on them and see what we can find out.”
Vinny Colantuono scored both goals against Mamaroneck. Paul Makaj made an assist, while goalie Ryan Wilson made three saves. Sanborn praised the defensive play of Max Giancarlo, Will Kautsky, Andrew Povall and John Furcick.
“They played solid — got the job done,” Sanborn said. “As I preached all year, everything starts with defending and the front line.”
