You’ll be hard-pressed to find a better game-winning catch this season than this one.
I’m not sure what’s more impressive on this 51-yard Hail Mary — that Weddington (Matthews, N.C.) junior quarterback David Bayha threw the ball almost 60 yards through the air or that junior tight end Blaise Arthur-Wong snatched the ball through three defenders and had the wherewithal to plunge into the end zone from a couple yards out for the 30-28 win.
Adding to the drama was the fact Sun Valley (Monroe, N.C.) sophomore wide receiver Anthony Marple had just hauled in a 38-yard touchdown catch to give his team a 28-24 lead with 9.5 seconds remaining, according to ucncfootball.com. Talk about a range of emotions.
Weddington junior Kris Zeledon reportedly returned the ensuing kickoff 20 yards to his own 49-yard line with just enough time for Bayha to find Arthur-Wong for the miracle in Monroe.
The following morning, a still-shocked Marple had the appropriate response on Twitter:
For the record, according to the box score on MaxPreps, the completion marked just the third on 10 attempts for Bayha and the only reception of Arthur-Wong’s evening against Sun Valley.
