Catholic sweeps Marianna in first round of playoffs | USA Today High School Sports

The Catholic Crusaders made their way out of the regional quarterfinals in convincing fashion, besting the Marianna Bulldogs in three sets.

The ‘Saders capped the match off with 25-3 win in the final set.

Catholic saw Ellen Floyd spread the ball around as she finished with 36 assists.

Kiley Brady was one the other end of quite a few of Floyd’s sets and produced 18 kills.

Catholic will aim to keep its postseason going this Saturday, when the Crusaders host the winner of the Florida High- North Bay Haven tilt.

Aggies start season off on the right foot

Though Tate’s first match was canceled due to weather, the Aggies hit the road for a 2-0 win over Choctaw on Wednesday night.

Kaley Bosinger and Tate’s strong defense led the way as Bosinger finished with two saves in the shutout.

Brittney Rankin and Makenna Stadford netted goals for Tate and Emma Grissom dished out the game’s only assist.

Tate hits the road again this Tuesday, this time to face Crestview.

Bell, Ward help UWF to 3-0 win at Valdosta

The University of West Florida women’s soccer team defeated Valdosta State 3-0 on Wednesday afternoon. UWF improves to 12-4 on the season with an 8-3 record in the Gulf South Conference.

West Florida and VSU finished the first half in a scoreless tie, and UWF held an advantage in shots and shots on goal. The Argos took eight total shots to Valdosta’s four and put four of those shots on target. Daryl Bell recorded three shots on goal in the first 45 minutes for West Florida, while Emily Vogler added one of her own.

Bell picked up her 11th goal of the season in the 55th minute after the VSU keeper saved an Amber Pennybaker shot inside the six-yard box. Kaley Ward added an insurance goal to seal the UWF win in the 80th minute, and it was her ninth of the year. Bell headed her second goal of the game and her 12th of the year to give UWF a 3-0 lead in the 90th minute.

Earlier in the day, UWF jumped to fourth in the latest South Region rankings. The third and fourth seeds for each region in the NCAA Tournament will host a first-round game against the fifth- and sixth-seeded teams, respectively.

UWF will host West Georgia for Senior Day and the Breast Cancer Awareness Game on Saturday, October 31. The game is set to begin at 1 p.m.
