Kyle Twombley is a running quarterback, pure and simple. Sure he can throw when needed, but the senior star and two-way starter at Minnechaug Regional prefers to take his snaps in the shotgun and scampers like his life depends on it, complete with a battering ram charge when he has to break the tough tackles. He’s a beast, a dogged and determined presence in the open field and an x-factor with the genuine ability to break open a game.
Case in point: This terrific touchdown against Holyoke at the 0:31 mark of the video above. In the course of an 80-yard scoring scamper, Twombley broke a jaw dropping seven tackles, all of which seemed like surefire stops at the time. After taking off up the right and breaking a series of tackles, then cut back across the field and juked his way around and out of three more potential stops as he sprinted and weaved his way to the end zone.
The touchdown was one of two scores on the ground to go with one through the air for Twombley, who paced Minnechaug to a 30-23 victory. Given that the two teams were separated by just seven points, something tells us there’s more than half a defense that would love to have that one Twombley carry back again.
