Runners will look to punch their tickets to Michigan International Speedway this weekend through the Michigan High School Athletic Association cross country regionals.
Maple Valley will kick things off Friday when they travel to St. Johns for a Division 3 regional.
The rest of the area will step to the starting line on Saturday. Lakeview will compete in the Division 1 regional at Portage’s West Middle School, which will also be the site of the Division 2 regional featuring Harper Creek and Pennfield and the Division 4 regional featuring St. Philip.
In the latest rankings by michigancrosscountry.com, St. Philip is No. 5 in Division 4 girls, while Coldwater is No. 6 in Division 2 boys.
Volleyball league meets this weekend
Before the MHSAA volleyball state tournament tips off Nov. 2, teams will get a crack at some hardware through league tournaments held throughout the area this weekend.
St. Joseph High School is the site of Saturday’s Southwestern Michigan Athletic Conference Tournament, which will include city schools Battle Creek Central and Lakeview.
Litchfield is hosting the Southern Central Athletic Association Tournament on Saturday, featuring No. 2-ranked St. Philip, honorable mention Climax-Scotts, Bellevue, Colon and Tekonsha.
Also Saturday, Springport is hosting Athens, Homer, Quincy and Union City among others for the Big Eight Conference Tournament.
