Marlette’s impressive boys soccer season has come to a close in the Division 4 regional semifinals.
With the Red Raiders tough, pesky defense, it seemed inevitable their game against University Liggett was going to be a low-scoring one. It was just that, as the Knights used a second half penalty kick goal to come away with a 1-0 win over Marlette.
Marlette senior goalkeeper Dalton McNary had 12 saves in the game.
“We stuck to our gameplan and we knew we had to play a good defensive game,” Marlette head coach Dave Hayden said. “We had three or four good chances, but their goalie did a good job.”
The Red Raiders end their season with a 16-3-1 overall record, a split of the Greater Thumb Conference South title and their first district title since 2011.
“I would have never thought we would compete the way we did this year,” Hayden said. “Once we lost that first game to Memphis in the league I knew it would be hard, but we fought back and won that too.
“I couldn’t be prouder in the way our team competed this year. They’re just a great group of guys.”
