Teams don’t plan to lose as a matter of habit, but in team bowling competitions there can be a disadvantage to cruising through the winners bracket and then waiting for an hour or more to meet the team emerging from consolation.

Both the girls team from Covenant Christian and the Bayside boys took the consolation route on Tuesday at the District 11 high school tournament, and both came out winners.

“It’s not necessarily a bad thing,” Bears senior Daniel Watkinson said. “After lunch, we didn’t get going quickly enough, and Satellite did. We just rallied from there.”

Watkinson had the top individual series of the day (289-237-257–783) and would have advanced to next week’s state tournament regardless of the Bears’ fate. Still, Bayside recovered from its first-round, 3-0 loss to the Scorpions and beat runner-up Heritage in the final, 3-2.

The Covenant Christian girls, knocked out of the winners bracket in the second round by Bayside, came back to win the championship, their third in a row and another ticket to Orlando’s Boardwalk Bowl, Nov. 4-5.

“We didn’t want (the early loss) to get us down,” Lions senior Chasey Cubine said. Covenant Christian earned its rematch with the Bears after a consolation final win over Palm Bay. “After we beat Palm Bay, we knew we could do this.”

In addition to the four teams in final matches, four bowlers qualified as individuals. Eau Gallie boys Brad Wood and Kendall Cumella joined Crystal Elliott, also from Eau Gallie, and Xiomara Santiago of Heritage in earning state spots.
