Two police constables were shot dead by unidentified men in Hyderi on Tuesday evening, while conducting snap-checking, the police said.

At least two assailants on a motorcycle gunned down the two policemen, Shahnawaz and Aslam, of the North Nazimabad police station. The police officials said that the deceased policemen were supposed to be on duty at the house of late lawyer Naimat Ali Randhawa, a former public prosecuter of the Anti-Terrorism Court and leader of Pakistan Muslim League — Nawaz Sindh lawyer wing.

Randhawa and his son, Tauqeer Ali Randhawa, were attacked when they were going home on September 2013. As a result, Randhawa was killed and his son was wounded in the attack. The slain lawyer’s family had threats, for which the family was being provided police security and a police picket was also built at his bungalow in North Nazimabad. The police personnel performed duties in different shifts.

“In the morning, they [the deceased cops] were deployed for security duty at Nazimabad during the polio campaign and then they were sent to the police picket at Randhawa’s home,” said North Nazimabad DSP Azam Khan while talking to The Express Tribune. However, the two policemen were not at the police picket outside Randhawa’s house when the incident occurred.

Crime rate down: police

Instead of performing duty at Randhawa’s house, the policemen were said to be on the main road and conducting snap checking, police officials said. The alleged criminals opened fire on the cops when the police tried to stop them. The police officials said that they are still inquiring as to why the two policemen were not on their assigned duties.

Both the policemen were shot in their heads, the police officials said. The bodies were taken to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for autopsies and later handed over to their families. Shahnawaz was a resident of Orangi Town while Aslam lived in Federal B Area.

Following the incident, Sindh IG Ghulam Hyder Jamali visited the crime scene and inquired about the incident. IG Jamali also issued suspension orders for DSP Khan and SHO Asif Aqeel and ordered a departmental inquiry against them. “The evidences about the assailants have already been collected and they [culprits] will soon be arrested,” the IGP said, adding that the cases of DSPs and the police constables’ killings will be sent to the military courts. No case has been registered yet.
