Kilpert, Spackenkill edge Highland in quarterfinals | USA Today High School Sports

Kait Kilpert scored 2:21 into the second half and top-seeded Spackenkill held on to edge No. 8 Highland, 1-0, in a Section 9 Class B girls soccer quarterfinal on Tuesday.

Kilpert, from 25 yards out, lofted a ball toward the right corner that sneaked in beyond the reach of the goalkeeper.

“She’s a player you can always count on,” Spartans goalkeeper Savannah Barefoot said of Kilpert. “She was bound to score, sooner or later.”

Barefoot made three saves, including a stop on a breakaway with nine minutes left to hold the lead for Spackenkill (17-0). The goalie leaped and punched the high shot over the crossbar.

“She had the shot headed for the top,” Barefoot said, “but I was able to hit it out with the heel of my palm.”

Midfielders Morgan Dominick and Maria Barefoot “played very well and helped us control the game,” Spackenkill coach Mike Corbett said. “We had the ball in their end the majority of the game, but couldn’t score. Their goalie played a great game.”

That would be Tori Capobianco, who had nine saves for Highland (5-10-2). Sweeper Celina McAleer also “played very well,” Huskies coach Pete Watkins said.

“We’re disappointed we didn’t win, but not disappointed with our effort,” Watkins said. “Spackenkill is a great team and we kept it a one-goal game. We had a chance near the end.”

Spackenkill hosts Dover at 2 p.m. Thursday.
