The Section 9 Class C boys soccer final will be a rubber match.
Webutuck High School and Millbrook met twice during the regular season, each winning one game. Now, at 4 p.m. at Middletown’s Faller Field on Wednesday, the Warriors and Blazers will play for the third time with the winner emerging as Class C champion.
“We split with them during the season,” said Millbrook coach Kyle Shoemaker, whose second-seeded Blazers beat third-seeded Chester 5-1 on Monday to reach the championship round. “We’ll see. It’s going to be a fun game.”
Zeke Kopilak scored twice against Chester while Alex Censi, Chris Maresca and Bryan Oliveros Martinez also scored. Sean Stegner had an assist, while Andrew Radovic made five saves.
“It was our fourth straight win, so we’re kind of on a roll now,” Shoemaker added. “I thought we played well, played the way we’d been planning on playing. They’re kind of buying into the system and it’s starting to come together.”
Fourth-seeded Webutuck knocked off top-seeded S.S. Seward Monday, 1-0, to get to the finals. Lenny Ordenez scored the Warriors’ lone goal on an assist by Chris Reed. Goalie Hunter Coulthard had one save.
“They were a much bigger team than we were,” Webutuck coach Kevin Doyle said of S.S. Seward. “After we scored we realized we’d win if we kept our heads on straight, and we pushed forward in the second half.”
Doyle credited his defense on a well-played game, and is expecting it to step up against Millbrook.
“Millbrook plays the same style as Seward,” said Doyle, whose Warriors are 7-8-1. “They’re a big team, a physical team. Hopefully our defense will play just as tight and limit their shots and set plays.”
Likewise, Shoemaker anticipates a battle. But that hasn’t negated his team’s enthusiasm and objective of winning.
“We’re excited about getting into the finals,” he said. “Now we’re going to try and win it.”
