The voting is once again open and it’s time to choose the next Lansing State Journal prep athlete of the week. Below are this week’s candidates and voting is open until noon Wednesday. The winner will be featured in the print edition of the LSJ. Nominees should submit a head shot to [email protected] (Refresh your screen if the poll doesn’t immediately appear).

PETER GALER, LANSING CATHOLIC FOOTBALL: The senior registered 17 tackles (nine solo, eight assists) while helping the Cougars conclude the regular season with a 35-10 win over previously unbeaten and reigning Division 6 state champion Monroe St. Mary Catholic Central. Monroe SMCC entered Friday’s contest averaging 40 points. Galer has been a part of a Lansing Catholic defense that’s allowed just 22 points over the final five weeks of the regular season. Galer has registered 79 tackles in eight games.

RENEE STURM, WILLIAMSTON VOLLEYBALL: The senior outside hitter helped the Hornets to a runner-up finish at their own tournament Saturday. Sturm had 63 kills, 35 digs and eight aces to lead Williamston, which posted pool play wins over Coleman and East Lansing and defeated Mason and New Lothrop in bracket play before falling to Tecumseh in the final. Sturm also had 11 kills, six digs and four aces in a CAAC White win over Fowlerville last week.

ALANA SUNDERMANN, HOLT VOLLEYBALL: The junior setter helped the Rams post wins over Eastern and East Lansing in the CAAC Blue tournament last week. Sundermann had 14 assists and six aces in a sweep of Eastern on Tuesday and added 32 assists in a sweep of East Lansing on Thursday. Those wins helped Holt (21-10-3) advance to face Okemos in the CAAC Blue tournament title match Tuesday.

JARRETT VANHAVEL, MASON FOOTBALL: The senior quarterback closed the regular season on a strong note, completing 19 of 25 passes for 255 yards and six touchdowns in a 59-18 victory over Detroit Community. VanHavel threw TD passes of 13, 9, 36, 2, 10 and 71 yards for the Bulldogs. VanHavel has completed 126 of  212 passes for 1,736 yards and 19 touchdowns this year.
