There will still be a handful of matches on Tuesday, but most of the tournament should take shape by the end of Monday night.
Here are some of the more important scenarios that will be affected by Monday’s results:
• Ossining and Peekskill each need to win their respective matches to clinch a .500 record for the season. If either team wins, all opponents they faced throughout the season will get an extra bonus point. Some teams played these teams three times combined, so these matches have major implications for them.
Teams that can gain three bonus points with both an Ossining and Peekskill win: Horace Greeley, Hen Hud, Beacon, Putnam Valley and Haldane.
Fight at the top of Class AA
• Scarsdale will be the No. 1 seed in Class AA if it wins its match today, but the Raiders have been battling injuries to three of their key players (Kristine Fink, Annemarie Horn, Sydney Bernstein). There are currently four Class AA teams who can grab the No. 1 seed — Scarsdale, Clarkstown North, Arlington and Fox Lane.
How Scarsdale gets the 1-seed: Beat Pelham OR Clarkstown North, Arlington, and Fox Lane all lose.
How Clarkstown North gets the 1-seed: Beat Clarkstown South AND Scarsdale loses.
How Arlington gets the 1-seed: Beat Mahopac AND Scarsdale and Clarkstown North lose.
How Fox Lane gets the 1-seed: Beat Yorktown AND Scarsdale, Clarkstown North, and Arlington all lose AND Ossining wins.
Change in Class A
As originally reported in the beginning of the season, Nyack will in fact compete in Class B this season, Indians coach Christian Collazo confirmed through athletic director Joe Sigillo early Monday morning. With this change, Panas must still win tonight to clinch the 1-seed, but it does shake things up in an already competitive Class A field now that Nyack is definitely out.
The race for the 1-seed is much simpler in Class A than it is in Class AA — if Panas wins, it’s the 1-seed; if not, John Jay must win its match. Those are the only two teams that can grab the top seed.
Nyack is the top seed in Class B… for now
As I’m typing this post, Nyack is the top seed in Class B.
However, the odds are in favor of Hen Hud grabbing the 1-seed by the end of the night. Even if the Sailors don’t snag the top seed, Pelham is still in contention to grab it. Nyack’s regular season is over, so all it can do is sit back and wait. Hen Hud still has a match of its own, plus two other matches that can give it the top seed, while Pelham has two matches of its own left to play.
How Nyack gets the 1-seed:
Hen Hud, Peekskill and Ossining lose Monday AND Pelham loses Monday or Tuesday
How Hen Hud gets the 1-seed:
Hen Hud AND Peekskill or Ossining win
Hen Hud wins, Peekskill and Ossining lose AND Pelham loses Monday or Tuesday
Hen Hud and Ossining lose, Peekskill wins AND Pelham loses Monday or Tuesday
Hen Hud and Peekskill lose, Ossining wins AND Pelham loses Monday or Tuesday
Hen Hud loses, Peekskill and Ossining win AND Pelham loses Monday or Tuesday
How Pelham gets the 1-seed: (must win Monday and Tuesday, plus these)
Hen Hud, Peekskill and Ossining all lose
Hen Hud and Ossining or Peekskill loss
Hen Hud loses, Peekskill and Ossining win
Hen Hud wins, Peekskill and Ossining lose
