Here’s a scary thought to tide you over until Halloween.
Reynolds and Rico Dowdle have won their first four Mountain Athletic Conference games by an exact average of 42 points. Which for the football layman could be six or seven touchdowns depending on what occurs with the extra-point attempts.
Now factor in that the Rockets (8-1, 4-0) have already cleared the two biggest obstacles (Asheville High and Erwin) to their first conference championship since 2012.
Still, there is some natural concern on coach Shane Laws part as he looks ahead to Friday’s matchup at Roberson (2-7, 1-3). Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. in Skyland, and a victory would clinch at least a share of the MAC 3-A title for Reynolds.
“T.C. has started to play with some confidence lately, and with good reason, they have some kids who can make plays,” Laws said.
“We know going over there that it’s their Senior Night and this is a rivalry. Just like Asheville and Erwin, you better show up expecting to play your best because I know this game will mean a lot to Roberson.”
The Rams played Asheville High tough Friday on the road before eventually succumbing, 28-21.
Meanwhile, Dowdle and Co. scored 63 unanswered points and 42 in the first quarter of a 63-6 romp over visiting McDowell.
Dowdle passed for 140 yards and a touchdown Friday at Dalton Stadium. He also ran for 105 yards and four touchdowns on just six carries to increase his season touchdown total to an area-best 43.
Andrew Moore was on the receiving end of Dowdle’s touchdown pass (21 yards) at the 3:47 mark of the first quarter. Nathan St. Onge added 75 rushing yards and a touchdown. Deshawn Finley, Sean Jones and A.J. Logan also scored touchdowns. River Naisang made all nine of his extra points.
“I was proud of our kids for Friday, they came right out of the gate, ready to go,” Laws said.
“That’s exactly what you want to see. When you’re able to get a big lead and play as many kids as you can, it’s a good night.”
