Waynesboro rolls past Broadway | USA Today High School Sports

BROADWAY – Waynesboro must like late-season drama.

Last year, the team began the season 3-5 before mounting a charge to reach the playoffs and advance to the third round. In the process the Little Giants won four games in a row before finally losing to Western Albemarle.

The Little Giants began this season 3-4, but after Friday night’s 34-0 win over Broadway, Waynesboro has won two games in a row to get over the .500 mark on the season.

“Something just starts clicking, man,” said Waynesboro’s Steffan Thornton, who had a wild 52-yard run late in the game. “We all start playing together. We all know our roles and we just get it done.”

It was Waynesboro’s first regular-season win over Broadway since 1999.

The win should also help Waynesboro in the 3A West playoff race. The win over Turner Ashby last week vaulted Waynesboro to 10th and Friday’s win will likely give them another jump in the ratings.

“The last two weeks, actually three weeks, we’ve played better,” said Waynesboro coach Derek McDaniel. “I think they’re getting a taste of it … it’s huge. If you’re playing well now you feel confident going into the playoffs.”

Waynesboro has one game left, a road trip to Fort Defiance, this regular season. That game is scheduled for next Friday. The Little Giants have a bye Nov. 6, the final week of the regular season.

Friday, Waynesboro scored on its first drive. Quarterback Chris Baker was part of two fourth-down conversions, the first on a 7-yard run on fourth-and-1 and the second on a 30-yard touchdown pass to Savion Jackson on fourth-and-12.

Then, two plays into Broadway’s first offensive drive, Baker scooped up a fumble and returned it 24 yards for the score. Baker added another touchdown with 3:07 left in the first quarter, this time on third down, when he scored on a 15-yard run.

Baker added two more touchdown runs in the third quarter to open up a comfortable lead.
