SHENANDOAH – It was total dominance for Stuarts Draft as it rolled past Page County 57-14 on a perfect evening for high school football Friday night at Panther Stadium.
Senior Brandon Terrell led the way for Draft, rushing for 96 yards and three touchdowns, one coming on an interception return. Sophomore Xavier Gunn added 86 yards and a trio of touchdowns and Dylan Lehmann added 71 yards rushing and a score as the Cougars had an all around big night.
Page opened the scoring after recovering a Cougar fumble at the Panther 31. Bailey Turner hauled in a 70 yard pass from Ethan Hizer and the Panthers were on top 6-0 midway through the first.
Stuarts Draft had to punt on its next possession before its defense rose to the occasion. Terrell picked off a pass and returned it 40 yards for a score and the game was tied 6-6 late in the first.
Terrell continued his terrific night in the second quarter. After a bad snap on a Page County punt gave Draft the ball at the Page 10, Terrell scored on a 4-yard run moments later and the Cougars took the lead for good at 13-6.
Terrell then ripped off a 62 yard run after a Page punt and the Cougars were in command 20-6 with 7:50 left in second quarter. Gunn scored two times before the half on a 60 yard pass from Garrett Campbell and then a 5-yard run. The Cougars also got a safety by tackling the Page ball carrier in the end zone and the Cougars led 36-6 at the break.
Lehmann scores on a 44 yard run in the third for Draft. Elijah Jarvis added a 5-yard score and Gunn had a 65-yard TD run for Draft in the fourth. Hizer paced the Panthers with 76 yards rushing and Hart was 8-of-15 passing for 161 yards. Campbell had 4-of-5 passing for 79 yards and a score for Draft.
“We didn’t come off the bus,” Draft coach Nathan Floyd said of his team’s slow start. “It showed in the first quarter and Page took it to us. We had a couple of people not play tonight due to injuries. BB stepped up and did a great job at tailback. Xavier Gunn is a talented runner and Lehmann had a typical Lehmann game. I’m proud of all three of them.”
Stuarts Draft (5-3) goes to Luray next week while Page County (1-7) entertains Buffalo Gap.
Floyd expects a battle against the Bulldogs.
“They are a big tough physical team and we will have our hands full, definitely. We are playing for a playoff spot and the goal is to get a home playoff spot,” the Cougars’ second-year coach said.
