The Spackenkill High School football team won its Section 9 Class B quarterfinal game Saturday over visiting Dover, 48-32.
Ahead 27-16 at halftime, the Spartans pulled further ahead. Quarterback Camron Abalos hit receiver Joe Arcuri for a touchdown, giving Spackenkill a 33-16 lead with 5:33 left in the third.
Later in the quarter, running back Dhyquem Lewinson carried it in from 15 yards out for another score. The Spartans faked the extra point, and Abalos ran it in, giving Spackenkill a 41-16 lead.
Dover responded in the fourth when quarterback Ethan Lounsbury found Nick Murphy for a touchdown. The Dragons converted for two points.
Abalos found Kabongo Barry however, giving the Spartans a 48-24 lead.
Lounsbury got another chance with under four minutes though, tossing a touchdown pass.
Spackenkill was able to hold on and wrap up the game from there.
Leading 7-0 after the first quarter, the Spartans began to pull away. Dhyquem Lewinson rushed for a touchdown, though the extra point was blocked.
The Spartans then executed an onside kickoff and recovered the ball on Dover’s 22-yard line. Abalos connected with Marlon Brooks, setting Spackenkill up on the goal line. Lewinson brought it in, making it 20-0 Spartans.
Dover had an answer with an 80-yard touchdown carry by Jaquon Futrell. The Dragons successfully converted for two points, making it 20-8.
Abalos hit Alex Strom in the end zone on the ensuing possession, giving Spackenkill a 27-8 edge.
But with under a minute to play in the half, the Dragons marched down to the Spackenkill 3-yard line. Futrell took it in from there, and with another two-point conversion, Dover trailed 27-16 at halftime.
