Quarterback Ty Pigrome threw four touchdown passes and ran for a touchdown as No. 6 Clay-Chalkville (Pinson, Ala.) shook off Gardendale 52-27 Friday night for the 6A-Region 6 title.
Gardendale (7-2) led 21-14 in the first half, but the Cougars (9-0) reeled off 38 unanswered points.
Pigrome’s first touchdown was a 36-yard strike to junior wide receiver Nico Collins. His second was a 14-yarder to Alabama commit T.J. Simmons. Pigrome later threw a 17-yard touchdown pass to Simmons. His final touchdown was an 8-yard pass to Desmond Williams early in the fourth quarter. Pigrome’s 1-yard touchdown run, set up by a 59-yard run by Brandon Perry, put the Cougars up 45-21 in the third quarter.

Quarterback Zach Cupps helped Gardendale keep pace early, throwing a 19-yard touchdown pass to Blake Zumbado and running for a 2-yard score. The Rockets got on the board on a 26-yard run by Demetrius King. Cupps also had a 40-yard touchdown pass to Reagan Padgett late in the fourth quarter.
The first half was dominated by the teams’ offenses with more than 700 yards combined, but two close calls hurt the Rockets just before the half. The first, on a long interception return, negated a potential 104-yard interception return for a touchdown by Gardendale was blown dead for an inadvertent whistle. Shortly after that, Gardendale fumbled on a hook and ladder play and the Cougars returned the fumble for a touchdown to go up 31-21 at the half.
