CHARLOTTE, N.C. – After losing a heartbreaker to Hough and needing overtime to top Vance, the Mallard Creek Mavericks wanted to prove a point Friday.
Their message was received loud and clear, as they put a solid game together in a 37-27 victory against Mecka rival A.L. Brown.
Quarterback James Smith was sensational, throwing for 265 yards and three scores. Wide receiver Ryan Jones was on the receiving end of all three scores, racking up 122 yards receiving in the game.
A.L. Brown quarterback Damon Johnson put up a solid effort in the loss, throwing for 140 yards and two touchdowns. Mallard Creek appeared to be on cruise control in the fourth quarter when Brown’s Sandon McCoy returned a kick 91 yards to bring the Wonders within 10 points.
With a loss against rival Hough on their record, the Mavs will have to wait patiently for an opportunity to win the conference. They’re off next week before closing out the regular season at home against North Meck. A.L. Brown returns home to play West Charlotte next week.
