Despite receiving a performance in which quarterback Matt Amone threw two touchdown passes, the Franklin D. Roosevelt High School football team lost to visiting Kingston Friday, 33-22.
Amone’s first touchdown came in the form of a 34-yard reception by Tyler Vansteenburgh. He connected with E.J. Cameron for his second touchdown, a 47-yard completion.
“We started off really well; we went on a seven-and-a-half minute drive, drove 65 yards down the field and scored,” said Roosevelt coach Brian Bellino, whose Presidents fell to 1-7. “Then we went in a rut, let up four touchdown passes.”
Bellino said Amone, a junior, was filling in for starting quarterback Justin Guerrero, who re-aggravated his knee in the Presidents’ loss to Minisink Valley last week. Bellino said Guerrero will be shut down for the remainder of the season.
Sophomore Jake Niesen scored on a 6-yard rush, while on defense Payton Sorci and Quin Winkler impressed their coach.
“Our interior defensive line and our front seven played pretty well,” Bellino said.
The Presidents will receive a bowl game against an opponent yet to be determined.
