The latest class of the Section V Soccer Hall of Fame, includes a former national high school coach of the year finalist.
John Butterworth, who coached the mighty Penfield boys varsity for 27 seasons, is part of this year’s eight-man induction class. The group includes former players: Mike Campisi (Aquinas), Jim Gentile (Spencerport), Peter Grillo (Marshall), Carl Hopfinger (Pittsford Sutherland), Mike Jacobson (Pittsford Mendon), John Martello (Eastridge) and Brian Usinger (Penfield).
Penfield remained one of the state’s winningest large-school programs after Butterworth was hired as coach in 1985. Butterworth led 11 Section V championship teams, including the state champions at Penfield in 2001, 2002 and 2004.
The 62-year old Pittsford graduate is a three-time Democrat and Chronicle All-Greater Rochester Coach of the Year, an honor he was a finalist for on a national level 10 years ago.
