Class 3-A No.2 Providence swept past Brownstown in the first round of the volleyball sectional at Charlestown on Thursday night.
The Pioneers, back-to-back state champions in 2-A who were moved up a notch this year because of the IHSAA’s success factor rule, opened with a 25-23, 25-16, 25-15 win over the Braves. Marissa Hornung had 12 kills while Lexie Libs had 24 assists for the Pioneers.
Providence (31-3) advanced to the semifinal on Saturday morning and will meet Scottsburg. Corydon will meet Silver Creek in the other semifinal, with the championship set for 7 p.m.
In the Class 2-A sectional at Clarksville, the Generals advanced with a 25-20, 25-16, 19-25, 25-15 win over Paoli. Clarksville will now face No.4 Henryville in the semifinal. Eastern Pekin will face Crawford County in the other semifinal.
Class A No.2 Christian Academy (23-8) opened its sectional defense with a sweep of Lanesville. The Warriors won 25-11, 25-16, 25-4 and moved into the semifinal to face Shawe Memorial in the semifinal round. South Central will play New Washington in the other semifinal.
