Where did eight weeks go? The top teams from around the state are setting up for their second seasons: The playoffs. There’s still plenty about the regular season to appreciate, though, starting with another edition of the American Family Insurance ALL-USA South Dakota Players of the Week:
With 258 yards and three touchdowns on the night, Josh Brown of Dell Rapids St. Mary eclipsed 5,000 career rushing yards. Teammate Christian Schnieders added 131 rushing yards and three scores.
Lyman’s Korder Cropsey racked up 363 rushing yards and six touchdowns on 25 carries in a 50-14 win over Lower Brule.
Hanson’s Wyatt Kayser posted 350 total yards — 283 rushing on 21 attempts to go with three catches for 67 yards — in a 44-14 win over Centerville. Kayser scored on runs of 13 and 61 yards.
Roosevelt’s Jett Thune threw six touchdown passes to lead the Rough Riders past Rapid City Central 68-26.
Could Riders-Warriors be precursor to championship?
Washington’s Jack Schelhaas was 9-for-12 passing for 134 yards and a score and added 107 yards rushing and a touchdown on the ground. The Warriors blanked Rapid City Stevens 42-0.
Anthony Andera and Braden Sommers each scored three touchdowns apiece to lead second-ranked ‘11B’ Aberdeen Roncalli in a 56-6 rout of Chamberlain. Andera scored on runs of six and 16 yards, and hauled in a 63-yard touchdown pass from Sommers (who threw for two other scores).
Daymein Lucas was 11 for 14 passing for 136 yards and two touchdowns to lead Sioux Valley over McCook Central/Montrose in overtime, 37-31. For MCM, Jerry Kappenman had 25 carries for 155 yards and two touchdowns, and added nine tackles on defense.
Seeds at stake as Harrisburg, Yankton square off
Chase Kortan finished with 16 carries for 185 yards and five touchdowns, including scoring runs of 50 and 60 yards, to lead Bon Homme past Platte-Geddes 44-0.
Langford Area’s Lincoln Gibbs ran for 168 yard and three touchdowns to lead the top-ranked ‘9B’ Lions in a 50-0 shutout of Leola-Frederick.
Sioux Falls Christian’s Keegan Van Egdom rushed for 263 yards and three touchdowns in a lopsided 54-0 win over Elk Point-Jefferson.
Winner’s Windsor Barry rushed seven times for 112 yards and two scores to lead the top-ranked ’11B’ Warriors in a 50-0 shutout of Redfield/Doland.
Gregory’s Andy McCance was 7-for-12 passing for 219 yards and four touchdowns as the Gorillas upended Kimball/White Lake 52-20. Jayd VanDerWerff caught two passes for 147 yards and two touchdowns to go with 113 yards and two scores on seven rushing attempts. Robert Vomacka rushed seven times for 120 yards and a touchdown.
SFC, Tri-Valley get cross-class battle before playoffs
Sam Clark rushed for 170 yards and three touchdowns to lead Baltic past Parker 50-26.
Dell Rapids’ Sam White racked up a 158 yards rushing and a pair of scores — one receiving — to lead the Quarriers past Dakota Valley 32-13.
Beresford’s Chris Kropuenske had 22 carries for 133 yards and three scores in a 28-0 win over Flandreau.
Canistota’s Shay Jolley rushed for 105 yards and two scores while teammate Jared Nielsen added 159 yards and two touchdowns as the Hawks easily handled Menno/Marion 50-0. Jolly also had a 62-yard punt return for a score.
Dalton Eng rushed eight times for 129 yards and two scores to power Castlewood past Elkton/Lake Benton 34-6.
