WHEN/WHERE: 7 p.m. Thursday at Bob Young Field

COACHES: Tri-Valley — Steve Bazata (fourth season; 23-16); Sioux Falls Christian — Jake Pettengill (fourth season; 14-18)

SEASON TO DATE: Strength of schedule has certainly been a factor for both teams, as SF Christian has enjoyed a largely ‘11B’ cast of opponents while Tri-Valley has played a majority of its games against ‘11A’ teams. The Mustangs have largely risen to the challenge, and their three losses have come against Canton, Lennox and West Central — teams with a combined 17-7 record. The Chargers have bullied most opponents, save for Madison, which is tied for the top-seed with St. Thomas More. Madison won that contest, but faced arguably its toughest test to date in the 32-26 OT win.

BOTTLING THE BACKS: Both units have playmakers at running back. For Tri-Valley, the workload is shared between sophomore Landon Freeman and senior Brenton Hanisch. For SF Christian, Keegan Van Egdom has shouldered the load with 165 carries for 1,486 yards and 16 touchdowns. Tailbacks Riley Hogan and Jackson Olson have been reliable ballcarriers as well. Both teams will run the ball, but Tri-Valley likely has the more arduous task in trying to stop it.

WHAT TO EXPECT: The Mustangs have earned a spot in the postseason. If they go on a run deep into the ‘11B’ bracket, it’s hard to imagine they’ll play a team as talented as the two teams at the end of their regular season schedule. In other words: A competitive outing against the Chargers would be something to build upon. SFC is on the cusp of its first playoff appearance in program history. Here’s guessing they get to it with just one blemish still on their record.
