As a defensive end, Clay Soule’s job is to control the edge and stop the opposing offense at all costs.
And in the early stages of last Friday’s 35-20 win over Laingsburg, the Dansville junior had his eyes set on the Wolfpack’s Kevin Koenig as he ran out on the field to begin the next play.
Before the ball was snapped, however, Soule gingerly made his way across the line of scrimmage and… tied his rival’s shoe.
Edwards: Introducing LSJ prep sports video of the week
The high-class act of sportsmanship was caught on video, along with laughs and cheers from those in attendance, and was voted this week’s LSJ prep video of the week.
“He was trying to tie his shoe with his gloves on and he couldn’t do it,” Soule said. “I asked him if he wanted me to tie his shoe, and I just went over there and tied it for him.
“I didn’t think twice about it. I think he was surprised.”
Not too long after Soule’s kind gesture, the Aggies, who have one loss, picked up their seventh win of the season. Dansville has guaranteed itself a playoff spot for the second consecutive year and captured a second-place finish in the Central Michigan Athletic Conference.
The community has shown its support throughout the special run.
“Everyone is behind us,” Soule said. “It’s pretty cool.
“We have to get the game done with (Friday) before we think about next week. We’re just moving one game at a time.”
