Sectionals are set to begin Thursday with the outbracket games, and like boys soccer beat writer Vin Mercogliano, I’m going to be doing some predictions. I know for a fact that I will be wrong on at least some of them, so feel free to agree/disagree (likely mostly the latter) with me. If I pick against your team and predict wrong, feel free to lay into me.
Class AA outbracket
No. 18 White Plains at No. 15 Carmel, 2 p.m.
Carmel has been a great story this year, finishing the year 8-7-1 after only winning one game last year. With the home field advantage, I think they’ll take care of White Plains, who are without star goalkeeper Danielle Okun.
No. 17 East Ramapo at No. 16 Clarkstown North, 4:15 p.m.
These two teams met twice during the regular season, with Clarkstown North winning both of them by 2-0 and 1-0 scores. I don’t think the third time will be the charm for East Ramapo.
Class A outbracket
No. 17 Beacon at No. 16 Sleepy Hollow, 2 p.m.
Beacon heads into sectionals on a three-game winning streak, along with a near-upset over Pleasantville the game before. I like their chances heading into this one.
No. 19 Peekskill at No. 14 Riverside, 3:30 p.m.
Tough one to decide here, I feel both sides are relatively even. I think the home field advantage will slightly play in Riverside’s favor.
No. 18 Panas at No. 15 Tappan Zee, 4:30 p.m.
Tappan Zee is not your typical outbracket team, the low seed is mainly a result of playing a tough schedule. I expect them to easily dispatch visiting Panas and give an interesting first-round match-up against Pearl River on Saturday.
