Game Balls, Week 7

Player of the Week

Emerson Genovese, Mamaroneck: For the snake-bitten Tigers to win, apparently they needed something special. They got it from Genovese, the receiver/defensive back/returnman, who totaled a whopping 372 all-purpose yards in a 42-28 victory at Carmel in the Class AA qualifying round. Genovese racked up 186 yards receiving on 10 catches, returned an interception 70 yards for a score and had another 116 yards on kick returns. All night, he simply couldn’t be stopped.

Coach of the Week, Week 7

Anthony Vitti, Mamaroneck and Mike Lynch, Hen Hud: Keep this in mind, ok? There were 24 qualifying round games this week in Classes AA, A and B. In those 24 games, the road teams were 2-22. Those two winners must’ve done something right, which is why both Vitti and Lynch were deserving as co-Coach of the Week.

Vitti’s team obviously succeed hitting the reset button after its 0-6 regular season. The Tigers led early and led throughout their 42-28 victory at 5-1 Carmel. Lynch and his team arrived at the same outcome in much different fashion. The Sailors needed to rally from a two touchdown deficit to sent the game to overtime. They won it 23-20 at Nyack on an OT field goal from Marquan Anderson.

Both Vitti and Lynch deserve credit for keeping their teams afloat after tough starts to the season. They will be much heavier underdogs this week, but both earned their chance at shocking the section.
