The Battle Creek Central boys’ soccer team got off to a strong start in the Michigan High School Athletic Association State Tournament Tuesday, earning a 2-0 victory over visiting Eaton Rapids in a Division 2 district quarterfinal.
The Bearcats’ Cesar Duran scored the opening goal on an a volley, with the assist coming on a cross from teammate Carlos Ramos. Biak Ahling added a goal in the second half for good measure, with the assist provided by Alex Hernandez.
In goal for BCC, Isaac Engelhardt earned his fifth shutout of the season.
The Bearcats advance to face Charlotte in the semifinal at Marshall High School on Thursday, beginning at 5 p.m.

Division 2 at Marshall
Charlotte 2, Coldwater 1: Charlotte pulled off the upset over Division 2 10th-ranked Coldwater, despite the Cardinals’ Mana Ahmed scoring his 30th goal of the season on an assist from Fadel Said. Brandon Coates made five saves in goal in the season-ending loss for Coldwater (16-4-2).
CALHOUN CHRISTIAN 3, (AT) MARSHALL ACADEMY 1: The Cougars hung on to win by scores of 25-16, 25-22, 21-25 and 25-21. Leading Calhoun Christian (10-0 Mid-South Conference) was Kirby Frodge with 14 kills, 18 digs and five aces; Lindsey Barry had 21 digs, 11 aces and 11 kills; Abby Parks had 20 assists, six kills and four aces; Hannah Huling had nine kills; Kara Twiest had 16 digs and Lauren Wilcox had 16 digs.
DELTON KELLOGG 3, GALESBURG-AUGUSTA 0: The Panthers earned the sweep by scores of 25-11, 25-18 and 25-22. Leading Delton Kellogg (21-21-4. 9-1 SAC) was Morgan Champion with 13 kills and five digs; Abby Wooten had eight kills Bailee Tigchelaar had 15 digs and six aces; Hannah Walker had 11 assists, eight digs and four aces; and Sam Mohn had 14 assists, five digs and two aces.
Girls’ cross country
SCAA JAMBOREE: St. Philip finished as co-conference champions after earning first place at Colon High School with a team score of 43. Leading the Tigers were Ava Strenge (first, 18:07); Riley Rutherford (second, 18:44); Madi Elliott (sixth, 19:58); Meagan Casterline (10th, 21:26) and Helen Berner (24th, 24:19).
Boys’ cross country
SCAA JAMBOREE: St. Philip finished third with 84 points. The Tigers were led by Jack Greenman (fourth, 17:04); Kenny Wojcik (eighth, 17:43); Drew Lantinga (14th, 18:17); Noah Berry (18th, 18:57) and Jon Perry (40th, 23:25).
