In a match finally decided after seven rounds of penalty kicks, the Fairdale High School boys soccer team posted a 2-1 victory over Butler on Tuesday in a Sixth Region Tournament quarterfinal at Mercy.
Jordan Morales’ goal gave the Bulldogs a 5-4 lead in the seventh round of the penalty-kick shootout. Butler’s Cesar Garcia then shot over the goal, ending the match.
Fairdale (19-3-1) advanced to face Bullitt Central (8-9-3) in Thursday’s 6 p.m. semifinal at Mercy. Bullitt Central defeated Bullitt East 4-3 in another quarterfinal Tuesday at Mercy, with the Cougars winning a penalty-kick shootout 3-2.
Fairdale took a 1-0 lead in the 26th minute, scoring on a Butler own goal after a long throw-in by the Bulldogs’ Nolan Cook,
Butler (18-4) tied it in the 74th minute when Irakoze Chartier scored.
Thursday’s other Sixth Region semifinal will match Fern Creek (16-4-1) against Holy Cross (17-5) at 7:30 p.m. Holy Cross beat Doss 4-0 and Fern Creek defeated Southern 3-0 on Tuesday.
Thursday’s semifinal winners will advance to Saturday’s 6 p.m. championship game.
