PORT CHARLOTTE — Lee County didn’t get any teams through the Region 2A-7 tournament and on to the state finals on Tuesday, but that didn’t mean some of the participants didn’t enjoy their time at Port Charlotte Golf Club.
Ida Baker’s Brittany Shin and Cape Coral’s Brooke Ciccone mastered the windy conditions to shoot 78 and 79, respectively, making them the top two individuals on non-qualifying teams and booking their trips to Mission Inn and Resort in Howey-in-the-Hills for the Class 2A state championship next weekend.
Ciccone’s Seahawks were the top area team, shooting a 410 to finish third behind state qualifiers Barron Collier (330) and Naples (358). Mia Nelson was the next-best scorer on the team with an 88.
Shin’s Bulldogs finished sixth overall with a 448, and Estero and North Fort Myers did not qualify for a team score — Estero for having two girls withdraw and North Fort Myers for only bringing three golfers.
Even with the withdrawls, the Wildcats managed to place two players among the top 10 individual scorers: Kim Egozi shot 83 and Kelli Kragh shot 85.
