As soon as it became clear that their bids to qualify for the state championships at Monday’s Region 2A-7 tournament had fallen short, the Ida Baker, Cypress Lake and Cape Coral high school boys golf teams gathered their things and prepared to make the trip home from Port Charlotte Golf Club.
Estero, however, stuck around. It, too, knew that it wouldn’t be going to states as a team — the Wildcats shot a 329 to finish fourth behind Barron Collier (307), Port Charlotte (321) and Naples (327) — but there was still a chance for some good news.
And when the final results came in, the wait proved worthwhile: Luke Farmer’s 2-over 74 proved good enough to place him among the top two golfers not on qualifying teams, booking his trip to next week’s Class 2A state championships at Mission Inn and Resort in Howey-in-the-Hills.
Farmer will be the only Region 2A-7 representative from area schools.
Led by TJ Clapp’s 79, Ida Baker shot a 335 to finish fifth. The Bulldogs could have finished 11 strokes better and in third place overall had they been able to count Adrian Strey’s 80, but he was disqualified for swearing.
Cypress Lake and Cape Coral finished eighth and ninth, respectively, with neither team having a player shoot better than 92s carded by the Panthers’ Kameron Smith and Hunter Johnson.
Mariner’s Joey Sagi and Lely’s Evan Meredith were the top scorers among individual district qualifiers with a pair of 84s.
