Missing one of its key players, the Beacon High School volleyball team entered its match against visiting Carmel with some extra focus on Monday.
Ireena Alekseeva, the Bulldogs setter, was home sick. With Alekseeva temporarily sidelined, Beacon beat the Rams 25-13, 25-17, 25-18.
The Bulldogs now host league foe Lakeland at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday,
“We played them a couple weeks ago,” said Beacon coach Ron Pagliaro, whose Bulldogs improved to 9-5 with the win over Carmel. “Every game was tight. It’s not going to be easy; we’ve improved, they (Lakeland) have improved. But we step it up in league matches and anticipate a good performance.”
Leading the way against Carmel was Kajal Kohli, who recorded 10 digs and 18 assists. Pagliaro praised her level of play, filling the void left by Alekseeva.
“Kajal had to fill in for Ireena,” Pagliaro said. “She stepped up. She hasn’t set the ball since match two of the year.”
Behind Kohli was Sydney Dexter, who registered nine service points, including three aces and six digs. Teammate Rebekah Ciancanelli followed suit with 11 service points, four aces and six digs.
“As a team we came out really focused and I think we were more focused because Ireena wasn’t there,” Pagliaro added. “Team effort was at a high. There was a lot of intensity and no letdown.”
