Track Review: Fall Out Boy – I Wanna Be Like You | USA Today High School Sports

As part of a new Disney covers album, Fall Out Boy recorded a cover of the song “I Wanna Be Like You” from The Jungle Book. This is not the first time they’ve done a song for a Disney compilation; last year, they recorded a song called “Immortals” for the Big Hero 6 soundtrack, which later appeared on their newest studio album, American Beauty/American Psycho. It should also be noted that Fall Out Boy haven’t been the first to cover this song for Disney; The Jonas Brothers also recorded a version.

Personally, I’m a fan of each version (the original, Jonas Brothers, Fall Out Boy), but for somewhat different reasons. As for the new one, it never really accomplishes much more than being a good time. It’s upbeat, happy, and optimistic in nature–that’s how the song was written, and they didn’t take liberty with the tone. They did, however, alter the vocal arrangement. I suppose that’s in place to compensate for the inability to change any lyrics.

The only other primary difference is the biggest: instrumentation. Unlike the original (but, conversely, similar to the Jonas version) electric guitars drive the music throughout with drums to support. It isn’t anything spectacular or Earth-shattering, but it’s true to Fall Out Boy’s signature pop punk/power pop style.

I asked a few of my fellow students what they thought of the song.

Brandon Marcucci, grade eleven, said, “the song was lighthearted and provoked good times, and I had good times with it”.

Sean McCrerey, a Junior, claims that “it encompasses Fall Out Boy’s rock personality, and at the same time, Disney’s friendly personality”.
