In order to counter the growing influence of his party’s main rival Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has decided to review and monitor governance in Punjab on a weekly basis.

Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif briefed the prime minister on the status of the large and small projects spreading across the province. These projects are related to critically important sectors of health, education, drinking water, roads and other infrastructure. The premier said both rural and urban areas of the province should be focused so that the entire population of the province gets equal opportunities and benefits from these projects.

Expressing satisfaction over the progress on these projects, the prime minister urged that the provincial government should continue parallel work on small, medium and long term projects.

The meeting was also attended by Minister for Railways Khawaja Saad Rafique, Planning, Development & Reform Minister Ahsan Iqbal and Punjab Law Minister Rana Sanaullah. Other senior federal and provincial officials were present during the meeting.

According to Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz’s (PML-N) officials, the decision to hold a weekly review of governance in Punjab has been taken in view of the party’s performance in the NA-122 by-polls in which it could secure victory only by a small margin of 4,161 votes.

Sources said the party leadership has now decided to improve performance of the Punjab government in order to counter the PTI in the 2018 election.
