Panas’ domination has gradually spread out past Section 1.
The Panthers took home top honors at the Lindenhurst on Saturday, downing state-ranked Class AA teams Connetquot and Massapequa in the semifinals and finals, respectively.
Carrying Panas to its 25-20, 25-27, 15-12 championship win was sophomore standout Yvette Burcescu, who registered 110 kills throughout the day to highlight and already impressive week.
Burcescu also had 19- and 27-kill performances against Lourdes and Beacon, respectively, which was good enough to earn a second Journal News player of the week selection since Sept. 27.
Journal News/Lohud.com volleyball beat reporter Mike Zacchio will pick a player of the week to be announced every Sunday. Fans, coaches, players, etc. can nominate players via Twitter (@Zacchio_LoHud), email ([email protected]), or text (if you have my number).
Please include the players’ name, school, grade, position and stats for the week (all matches from Monday through Sunday, if they played that morning). Tournament performances (all-tournament team, tournament MVP, team win, etc.) count towards this award, even if you don’t have exact stats.
Example: Brooke Davis, Tree Hill H.S., Sr., OH: Brooke had 43 kills, 34 assists, 38 digs and 10 blocks in the Ravens’ three wins this week. She was also named to the all-tournament team at the Rosewood Invitational on Saturday.
There is no limit to how many times a player can win during the season. I will do my best to pick the best candidate. Sometimes that will be a repeat winner. I’ll try to spread the love as much as I can, but as the saying goes, “Men lie, women lie, numbers don’t.”
Announcements will usually be posted in the afternoons or evenings. Please try to submit all nominations by Saturday night (or sooner, if the team does not have a tournament/match over the weekend).
