MILAN: Gonzalo Higuain’s fifth league goal of the season helped Napoli to a 2-1 win over Fiorentina on Sunday as Mauricio Sarri’s men moved up to fourth place in Serie A.
Napoli welcomed Fiorentina to the San Paolo looking to extend a recent purple patch that has seen Sarri’s side remain unbeaten in their last six outings.
Fiorentina proved tough customers but Higuain struck in the 75th minute after Nikola Kalinic had levelled Lorenzo Insigne’s superb opener for the hosts to secure Napoli’s fourth win of the campaign.
Elsewhere, Sampdoria’s promising start came to a shuddering halt with a 2-0 defeat at Frosinone, while Lazio were stunned 2-1 away to Sassuolo.
Atalanta, meanwhile, romped to 3-0 win in Bergamo that came complete with a stunning corner kick goal from Alejandro Gomez.
De Rossi marks 500th Roma game with goal
Daniele de Rossi marked his 500th appearance for Roma with a goal in his team’s 3-1 win over Empoli on Saturday.
The 32-year-old found the target in the 59th minute after Miralem Pjanic had hit the opener with a superb free-kick three minutes earlier.
The Bosnian also played a key role in de Rossi’s goal when his corner was headed home by the midfield veteran.
Roma, playing without the injured Francesco Totti and Edin Dzeko, were 3-0 to the good in the 69th minute when Mohamed Salah found the net after being set up by Gervinho.
Empoli pulled a goal back through Austrian international Marcel Buechel in the 70th minute but the three points for Roma will be a huge boost ahead of their Champions League clash at Bayer Leverkusen on Tuesday.
