Clare’s goal lifts Sallies past Jaguars 1-0 | USA Today High School Sports

WILMINGTON As the Salesianum boys soccer team plays a challenging schedule filled with opponents from different states, their focus remains on winning the DIAA Division I state championship year in and year out.

That includes yearly battles with Flight A-powerhouse Appoquinimink, and on Saturday afternoon, senior forward Trevor Clare’s goal in the 24th minute of the second half made the difference as the defending state champions handed the visiting Jaguars their first loss of the season 1-0.

“Bryce Wallace did all the work,” Clare modestly said of his shot from in front of the net that zipped under Appo goalkeeper Jason Sommer that proved to be the winner. “He made a great run down the side and just got the ball to me. It was an easy finish.”

It wasn’t an easy game for either side though as physical play and close calls around the goal left both Sommer and Sals keeper Gavin Campbell a little worse for wear. Campbell preserved with the aid of his defense and recorded three saves of his own for the shutout.

“We were just working on our game as a defense,” Campbell said. “We worked well together and did a really good job of keeping them off the back.”

The win helped Salesianum improve to 8-3-1 on the season, including a 6-0-1 mark against Delaware teams, which helps in preparation for the state tournament.

“I’d say we’re very high for the tournament right now,” Clare said. “We’ve been working really hard as a team and because Appo’s a rival and a really good team in the state, it’s always good to get a win.”

“They’re a really big team in Delaware, so we wanted to go out and get a win,” Campbell added. “I think we’ve got a good shot at winning the championship again this year.”

Appoquinimink (10-1) got seven saves in goal from Sommer and outshot Sallies 8-6. Sallies led in corner kicks 4-2.
