FREEDOM PLAINS – The Arlington High School football team won its Section 1 Class AA qualifying game Friday, beating Roy C. Ketcham 43-21.
Leading by 22-21 to begin the fourth, Arlington quickly created some breathing room. From 10 yards out, quarterback Justin Leigh rolled out to his right, found an opening and ran it in the end zone. The touchdown gave the Admirals a 29-21 lead.
Later in the quarter Rob Tannenbaum ran it in from 64 yards out, a score that padded Arlington’s lead. He added another touchdown with 4:30 to go, scoring from 30 yards out.
Tannenbaum scored from three yards out with 10:15 left in the third, a touchdown that gave Arlington a 22-14 lead. But Ketcham answered on the ensuing drive with an 80-yard touchdown rush by Jesse Pascale, making it 22-21 before Arlington started its run.
The Admirals and Indians traded the lead twice over the first half. Ketcham took an initial 7-0 lead with 7:18 left in the first quarter when quarterback Al Dockery hit Sergio Sanchez in the end zone for a touchdown.
Arlington had answered with a 2-yard touchdown carry by Tannenbaum, though the Admirals missed the extra point. Kicker Alex Maier atoned for it and gave Arlington a 9-7 lead with 5:59 left in the half with an 18-yard field goal.
However, Dockery connected with Pascale for a 66-yard touchdown, which tipped the scales back in Ketcham’s favor, 14-9, with 3:09 to go before the intermission.
But Tannenbaum struck again before halftime, as Arlington drove to the goal line and he carried it in five yards for an Admiral touchdown. Arlington missed the two-point conversion, and held a 15-14 lead after the first 24 minutes.
