Hunter Bontrager stepped in at quarterback late in the contest for regular starter Maurice Flournoy and did not disappoint. He fired Cape Coral’s final three touchdown passes of the contest, including the 10-yard game winner to C.J. Lewis.

Bontrager lined up at wide receiver instead of quarterback for what would be the game’s final play on first down and took a jet sweep and found a wide open Lewis to end the game.

The first of Bontrager’s three consecutive touchdowns came on a 14-yard strike to Isaac Stevens with 1:33 left in the game to tie the score at 35. Bontrager finished with 96 yards and three touchdowns on just eight passing attempts.

The overtime began with a few runs by Island Coast before Quad Jenkins punched in a 3-yard run to momentarily put his Gators on top. After Island Coast forced a fourth and goal from the 18, Bontrager connected with Lewis on a floating pass to the middle of the end zone to force a second overtime.

Cape Coral stopped Island Coast on fourth down to start the second overtime setting up the Seahawks’ game-winning play.

“Anytime we play expect some trick plays.” Cape coach Larry Gary said. “We practice these plays all the time and try to put more guys on one side of the field than the defense has.”

Island Coast received a big effort from their ground game as they were led by Jerry Cambric, who had 106 yards and a touchdown.

Island Coast looked to have the game won on a 50-yard touchdown run by Cambric with under a minute remaining but it was called back due to a holding penalty at the beginning of the play.

That penalty didn’t kill us; we were still able to take the lead in overtime.” John Schwochow said. “This is just another learning experience for our team and we have to fight to keep getting better and we did tonight,” he said.
