The St. Clair boys tennis team scored nine points Friday at the Division 3 state tennis finals in Holland, which coach Dave Clutts said was the most his team has ever recorded in a state final.
“The kids played really well,” Clutts said. “That should definitely get us into the top 10. Six flights won points for us.”
St. Clair won two points at No. 2 and 4 singles, and No. 4 doubles as Troy Distelrath, Garrett Vigneron and the team of Santino Lawrence and Joe Marcath each won two-point, second-round matches. Distelrath defeated Chelsea’s Matthew Kimball 5-7, 6-1, 6-3, while Vigneron defeated Petoskey’s Gunnar McNamara, and Lawrence and Marcath defeated the team from Allegan 6-3, 6-2.
At No. 1 singles, Seth Pinnoo defeated Chelsea’s Ryan Jacobs 6-2, 6-3 to claim a point. The No. 1 doubles team of Ryan Maben and Shaun McCormick defeated a team from Allegan 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 in its first-round match, while the No. 2 doubles team of Loren Isaac and Matt Tetreau defeated the team from Hamilton 6-3, 6-1.
Armada earned two points, as the Devon Lahaie defeated Spencer Boeve of Hamilton 6-4, 6-4 at No. 2 singles, and the No. 1 doubles team of Frank Ferrari and Riley Jacob defeated the team from Cadillac 6-2, 6-2 in the first round.
In Division 2, Port Huron’s Jake Johnson and Christian Harris defeated the team from Wyandotte Roosevelt 6-0, 6-2 to earn the Big Reds a point.
No area teams or players advanced past the quarterfinals in Division 2 or 3.
