Merritt Island senior Steven Cross, last year’s Class 3A state cross country runner-up and one of the top boys in the state this season, will enter the stretch run of his fall high school career on Saturday at the Cape Coast Conference championship.
The girls will race at 8 a.m., followed by the boys at 8:30, both running 5,000 meters at Wickham Park.
Cross will defend his boys championship won last year at Chain of Lakes Park in Titusville. The Terriers’ Mason Jones, also back, was third in that race. In last year’s team competition, the Melbourne boys and Merritt Island’s girls both won comfortably.
Cross has the best time by a Brevard performer this season, 15:21, followed by Satellite’s Trevor Kattenberg at 15:57 and Jones (16:00).
Brevard high school cross country bests
Last year’s female winner, Julie Wollrath of Melbourne, graduated, but runner-up Skye Carey of Space Coast is back. Carey, also a senior, has the best Brevard time by a public school competitor in 2015, 18:25. Hannah Fleming (19:31) of Astronaut and Lana Rukab (19:50) of Satellite follow.
District meets will be run next week.
