Most of the seeded players advanced at the Northern Region Division I boys tennis tournament Wednesday at Bishop Manogue.
Two seeded singles players lost as did two seeded doubles teams.
Damonte Ranch has the top three seeds in singles, No. 1 Tim Zagar, No. 2 Zeke Brooks and No. 3 Natali Castelli, and all three won their first-round matches.
Damonte Ranch coach Don Roesler said having experienced players helps and getting Castelli, who transferred from Galena and was the No. 1 player there, is a big plus.
“We had a couple guys come back for their second and third year and had some experience,” Roesler said.
Zagar, a junior and Brooke, a freshman are both undefeated in singles in the regular season. Castelli, a junior, has one loss this year.
If they keep winning, Castelli and Brooks would meet in the semifinals Saturday.
Reno’s Ian Rinehart is playing doubles at Regionals to help his chances at state. He and William Boyden are the No. 1-seeded doubles team and they won 6-1, 6-0 Wednesday.
Zagar beat Rinehart in singles at the team competition last week.
The top three singles and top three doubles advance to next week’s state tournament at the Darling Tennis Center in Las Vegas.
The No. 2 doubles team of Marlin Brucato and Daulton O’Connell from Spanish Springs also won Wednesday.
The boys second round and quarterfinals are Friday at Caughlin Club starting at noon. The girls are also at Caughlin Club on Friday, starting at 9 a.m.
