The Gary Trent Jr. Blog: USA Basketball, Duke and Kentucky visits, NBA 2K16 and more | USA Today High School Sports

Gary Trent Jr. was the most dominant player on the prestigious Nike EYBL this summer, leading the league averaging 22.1 points a game. That kind of production has a who’s who of college basketball heavyweights like Duke, Kentucky, Arizona, Kansas, Michigan State, and many others, all giving intense chase. Trent, a rising junior shooting guard at Apple Valley (Apple Valley, Minn.) who is ranked No. 9 overall in the ESPN 60, has agreed to give USA TODAY HSS exclusive access into his world by chronicling everything from intimate details about his recruitment to his everyday life in a monthly blog.

What’s up world, it’s Gary Trent Jr. I’m back!

I’ve gotta tell y’all about USA Basketball, school starting up and my visits that I’ve got coming up so let’s get into it!

I went to USA Basketball last week and had a great experience as always.

I just love playing against the best players in the country and at USA Basketball everyone is bringing their A game. I love it. I feel like I get better every time I go.

I will tell y’all I definitely dunked on a dude while I was down there, but I won’t tell y’all who! He’d be mad at me, haha!

I pump-faked his teammate and his teammate jumped and I came down on the right side of the lane and rose up. He jumped to block it and I dunked it. I got that “ooh’ from the guys so that’s always fun!

I think the two guys that impressed me the most were Josh Jackson and Jayson Tatum just because they went so hard and were great leaders.

Of course my man Wendell (Carter) was down there with me at USA and we just kicked it and hung out. We’re still on board with our package deal; we’re actually planning to visit Duke at the same time this weekend so that should be fun.

Before that I’m visiting Kentucky on Friday, but I’m going there by myself. I can’t wait for that one either. I took a visit to Minnesota for a football game recently too; that was a lot of fun. All of the visits were unofficials.

I’m the kind of guy who will go ahead and commit whenever I know it’s the right situation. I don’t see myself lingering around with it. I’m thinking after this season of building close relationships with coaches I’m gonna go ahead and chop the list down and go from there.

We’ve had open gym since last month and everyone’s been there; Coach K, Coach Matta, Coach Izzo, Coach Miller… Coach Cal plans on coming out too. It’s been cool. I talk to all the coaches when they come and those talks are always real cool. They’re all pretty much the same; they talk about how great their school is and how great I’d fit in.

I love talking with the coaches. They come up with some cool stuff to try and get you to their school too! I had one coach send me an NBA 2K18 cover with my face on the player in the jersey on the cover. I thought that was pretty cool.

Speaking of that, I know y’all know that NBA 2K16 came out recently and, like I told y’all in the last blog, I am the greatest when it comes to that game. I see some of my guys talking about how they’re the King of 2K, but I’m the god! No one wants to see me in that, trust me!

OK back to my recruitment; I think the biggest thing that will go into my decision is the coaching staff and the style of play. I don’t care who’s there; like I said earlier I prefer competition so that won’t be a factor at all.

I know everyone saw that my guy Tre Jones got the Duke offer and I was definitely happy to see that. He’s our starting point guard at Apple Valley and he’s a year behind me. Some people were surprised by the offer, but I wasn’t surprised at all.

His work ethic is great and he had a great summer!

My junior year is going great! My grades are great and I like all my teachers and classes so you can’t ask for anything more than that.

As for my team, we’re definitely looking strong again. We won states last year and I’m confident that we can repeat. I feel like we’ve improved a lot. We’re older, stronger, wiser, bigger and I really think that we upgraded. Last year everyone said when Tyus (Jones) left we wouldn’t be anything and things like that and we proved them wrong. It’ll be tougher because everyone will be gunning for us this year, but we like it like that.

OK, have y’all heard that What a Time To Be Alive album from my man Drake and Future? You definitely need to if you haven’t. It’s great. Honestly, whatever Drake touches is gonna be something!

Y’all already know that!

OK guys, once again, this is Trent’s Truth and I appreciate y’all for taking the time to read.

I’ll check back in soon with you.
